Discover Nothern Kenya “Big Five”

When you journey north beyond Kenya’s classic savannahs, you’ll find a wilder, more rugged world – home to the Northern Kenya Big Five, a group of rare and beautiful species found mostly in this region.
Meet the Northern Big Five:

  1. 🦓 Grevy’s Zebra
With their narrow black-and-white stripes, large round ears, and white bellies, Grevy’s zebras are the most striking of all zebra species. Unlike their cousins in the south, they are adapted to dry, arid landscapes and are now endangered — making a sighting truly special.
  2. 🦒 Reticulated Giraffe
Known for its crisp, net-like (reticulated) patterns, this giraffe is one of Kenya’s most photogenic creatures. It roams the open plains of Samburu and Isiolo, where its long neck helps it feed on the tallest acacia trees.
  3. 🐪 Beisa Oryx
A symbol of survival in the desert, the Beisa Oryx has long, straight horns and a striking black-and-white face mask. It’s perfectly adapted to the heat, going for days without water while thriving in the dry bushlands of northern Kenya.
  4. 🐦 Somali Ostrich
Larger and more vibrant than the common ostrich, the Somali ostrich has bright blue legs and neck — especially vivid in males during mating season. This elegant bird is built for speed and dominates the open scrublands with ease.
  5. 🦌 Gerenuk (The Giraffe Gazelle)
With its slender body, elongated neck and ability to stand on two legs to feed, the gerenuk is a sight to behold. Its name means “giraffe-necked” in Somali, and it’s often seen gracefully browsing leaves beyond the reach of other antelopes.

These five species represent the unique wildlife heritage of Northern Kenya — from Samburu and Buffalo Springs to OlPejeta Conservancy -regions where local communities and conservation efforts work hand in hand to protect these treasures.
