A private, professionally guided expedition crafted for professional photographers and everyone seeking rare cultural moments – from Samburu via Chlabi Desert to Lake Turkana.
[itinerary title=”Day 1: Nairobi – Nanyuki – 3.5 – 4 hours drive” number=”1″ style=”default”]Arrival in Nairobi at 13:00. Meet your guide and drivers and begin your journey north toward Nanyuki, a town lying on the foothills of Mount Kenya.
Check in at Soames Hotel, a peaceful lodge surrounded by lawns and acacia trees. Enjoy a relaxing evening and dinner at the hotel (drinks not included).
Overnight: Soames Hotel[/itinerary]
[itinerary title=”Day 2. Nanyuki – Marsabit – 5 hours drive” number=”2″ style=”default”]After breakfast, depart at 08:00 and drive deeper into northern Kenya. The landscape gradually shifts from the fertile Laikipia region into the dry, far northern frontier.
Arrive in Marsabit for lunch. In the afternoon, visit Marsabit National Park — a surprising green oasis with forested craters — or visit a local Borana or Rendille community for a first cultural encounter. Return to your lodge for dinner.
Overnight: Sand and Rock Hotel or similar[/itinerary]
[itinerary title=”Day 3. Marsabit – North Horr – 6-7 hours drive” number=”3″ style=”default”]Breakfast and 08:00 departure.
This is one of the most spectacular days of the expedition. Drive across the Chalbi Desert, an ancient lakebed of shimmering salt pans, mirages, and open horizons. Along the way, photograph camel caravans crossing the desert and the stark beauty of this seldom-traveled route.
Stop for packed lunch from Marsabit, ideal due to the remoteness of the route.
In the afternoon or late afternoon (best light), visit a Gabbra community — skilled nomads and camel herders who have mastered survival in this harsh environment. Cultural and photography sessions are best planned for late afternoon golden light, when many families return from grazing.
Arrive in North Horr in the late afternoon. Rest and dinner.
Overnight: camp/camping[/itinerary]
[itinerary title=”Day 4. North Horr – Loiyangalani – 3-4 hours drive” number=”4″ style=”default”]Breakfast and 08:00 departure toward Loiyangalani, on the eastern shore of Lake Turkana.
Depending on conditions and community availability, you may visit a Gabbra settlement near North Horr for an early-morning portrait session before departure.
Arrive and check into your lodge in Loiyangalani. After lunch, visit the excellent Desert Museum, showcasing the cultures of the Turkana, El Molo, Rendille, Gabbra, and more.
In the evening, head to the lakeshore for a sunset visit to the El Molo tribe — fishermen who live in Kenya’s smallest ethnic community. Golden hour here offers dramatic light over the jade-colored lake.
Overnight: Loiyangalani – Malabo Resort / Tilamari Village / Oasis Lodge / Palm Shade[/itinerary]
[itinerary title=”Day 5. Loiyangalani – El Molo & Turkana Tribes” number=”5″ style=”default”]After breakfast, embark on a morning visit to the El Molo community. This is the best time for documentary photography as fishermen return with the morning light and lake reflections.
Return for lunch.
In the late afternoon, visit a Turkana village. Expect vivid portrait opportunities: warriors with ochre hairstyles and spears, women in layered, colorful bead collars, traditional dances, and everyday life scenes bathed in warm golden light.
Overnight: Loiyangalani – same accommodation[/itinerary]
[itinerary title=”Day 6. Loiyangalani → Tuum (Mt. Nyiro Foothills) – 4 hours drive” number=”6″ style=”default”]After breakfast, enjoy a final morning Turkana village visit for soft sunrise light and daily life moments.
Depart southward through volcanic rock formations and vast desert plains, arriving in Tuum, tucked beneath the towering Mount Nyiro.
Lunch upon arrival. In the afternoon, visit Samburu communities in the area — a unique opportunity to contrast the styles and traditions of different tribes.
Dinner at the guest facility.
Overnight: Tuum – S.A.A. Camping / Mt Nyiro Stands Guest House[/itinerary]
[itinerary title=”Day 7. Tuum – Suguta Valley & Lake Logipi expedition” number=”7″ style=”default”]After breakfast, set out for a full-day expedition into the remote and dramatic Suguta Valley, known as one of Africa’s most inaccessible landscapes. Carry packed lunches due to the remoteness.
Visit Lake Logipi, a soda lake often glowing pink with thousands of flamingos. Explore the Barrier Volcano Complex, a rugged series of volcanic formations separating Lake Turkana from the Suguta Valley.
Return to Tuum for dinner.
Overnight: Tuum – same accommodation[/itinerary]
[itinerary title=”Day 8. Tuum → Ngurunit (Ndoto Mountains & Rendille Villages) – 3–4 hours drive” number=”8″ style=”default”]After breakfast, descend from the Nyiro highlands toward the dramatic Ndoto Mountains, eventually reaching the oasis-like settlement of Ngurunit.
Arrive for lunch.
In the afternoon, visit Rendille communities, well known for their camel culture, long beaded headgear, and graceful attire. Afterwards, enjoy an optional refreshing experience at the natural rock slides — smooth rock formations creating small pools.
Dinner at the guesthouse or local lodge.
Overnight: Ngurunit – Golbo Guest House[/itinerary]
[itinerary title=”Day 9. Ngurunit → Samburu (4.5 hours drive)” number=”9″ style=”default”]Breakfast and departure to Samburu National Reserve.
Arrive in time for lunch and an afternoon of relaxation or a game drive in the reserve, home to the Samburu Five: Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, and beisa oryx.
Dinner at the lodge.
Overnight: Samburu Sopa Lodge.[/itinerary]
[itinerary title=” Day 10. Samburu → Nairobi (6–7 hours drive or flight)” number=”10″ style=”default”]After breakfast, enjoy an optional morning game drive, then begin the journey back to Nairobi. Stop for lunch at the charming Trout Tree Restaurant, built around giant fig trees.
Arrive in Nairobi for an overnight stay or connect to your international flight (after 18:00).
Alternatively, take a flight from Samburu (ETA Nairobi ~11:00), enjoy lunch in Nairobi, and transfer to Jomo Kenyatta Airport for your departure.[/itinerary]
